Kristallisierschalen werden üblicherweise zur Kristallisation von Feststoffen aus Lösungen, oder Suspensionen genutzt, indem man das Lösemittel verdunsten lässt. Ebenfalls können Kristallisierschalen zum Verdampfen über einem Brenner verwendet werden, um den Prozess des Auskristallisierens zu beschleunigen.
Kristallisierschalen sind Bechergläsern sehr ähnlich, nur dass sie wesentlich flacher sind und keine Skalierung haben.
Als Schauexpermiment kann man z. B. eine gesättigte Kupfersulfatlösung in eine Kristallisierschale geben. Lässt man diese wochenlang stehen, entstehen mit dem langsamen Verdunsten des Wassers schöne, grosse Kristalle.
