Petrischalen sind nach Julius Richard Petri (1852 - 1921) benannt. Nach dem Medizinstudium und einer kurzen Tätigkeit als Militärarzt arbeitete der deutsche Bakteriologe an einer Heilstätte für Lungenkranke. 1886 wechselte er an das, von Robert Koch geleitete, Institut für Bakteriologie. Er entwickelte und verbesserte zahlreiche Arbeitsverfahren und Gerätschaften, u. a. die Petrischale.
Petrischalen - auch Kulturschalen oder Zellkultur-Schalen genannt - sind runde flache Behältnisse mit übergreifendem Deckel. Sie werden zur Kultivierung von Mikroorganismen eingesetzt. Hierfür wird eine flache Schicht aus einem gelförmigen Nährmedium, das die Mikroorganismen mit Wasser und Nährstoffen versorgt, in die Petrischale gegeben (z. B. Agar).
Zum Einsatz kommen Petrischalen in medizinischen, biologischen und chemischen Laboren. Neben Petrischalen aus Glas gibt es diese heute auch aus Kunststoff.
